In view of growing concerns over the spread of the COVID-19 virus, and following directives issued by the State of CA, the MOB seminar has been postponed to a later date. In accordance with a CA State public health directive indued on 12 March, "gatherings should be postponed or canceled across the state until at least the end of March. Non-essential gatherings must be limited to no more than 250 people, while smaller events can proceed only if the organizers can implement social distancing of 6 feet per person. Gatherings of individuals who are at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19 should be limited to no more than 10 people, while also following social distancing guidelines." For the full text of the directive please see https://www.gov.ca.gov/2020/03/11/california-public-health-experts-mass-gatherings-should-be-postponed-or-canceled-statewide-to-slow-the-spread-of-covid-19/
It is with a great deal of disappointment that we decided to postpone the seminar. Similar safety at sea seminars across the country have been, or are being cancelled or postponed. In consultation with Chuck Hawley, the main presenter, the seminar will be organized at a later date, hopefully in the near future. In the mean time, Regatta Network has been requested to fully refund registration fees. You are encouraged to continue practice COB recovery procedures on your boats as often as possible. Here are a few useful resources to refresh your memory on the various recovery methods and equipment to be used. You are also encourage to look at the Safety tab on the Club's website (at this stage it is available to MPYC member only):
And remember, recovering a wet person in full sailing gear is much more difficult than picking up a flotation cushion, especially in inclement weather! So go out and practice!!
Please stay healthy, and if you go out sailing, stay safe!
Following last year’s well-attended “Know your PFD” seminar, MPYC is once again fortunate to have Chuck Hawley, former Chairman of the US Sailing Safety at Sea Committee, to conduct a custom safety seminar. The Man Overboard, or Crew Overboard as its now called, seminar is scheduled for Saturday March 14th, 10 am at the clubhouse.
Chuck will present a three hour seminar specifically designed for MOB/COB situations. A two hour classroom discussion will be followed by lunch and a one hour on-the-water demonstration from the wharf. Cost is $25 including lunch. Registration is full, Those still interested in signing up on a waitlist may contact the Race Chairperson at email@example.com.
