Summer Sailing
The 2023 Summer Sailing Program consists of various single and multi-week sessions of sailing. Classes are split into half day sessions, Morning (9:30am - 12:30pm) and Afternoon (1:30pm - 4:30pm).

Prerequisites: Must be at least 8 years old or about to enter 3rd grade.
Description: This class is designed to teach the basics of sailing and to prepare your child to continue on to the next level. Sailors will learn how to rig and sail solo in an Opti, while learning about boat parts, wind direction, and points of sail. Note: For all-day programming look at the water sports class in the afternoon.
Schedule: 9:30 AM-12:30 PM | Monday-Friday, One Week per Session
Cost: Non-Member $380 or SYC/MPYC Junior Member $295
Prerequisites: Must be at least 9 years old & taken Learn to Sail.
Description: This class is designed for sailors who have prior sailing experience and want to develop better sailing skills in the Opti. Sailors will walk away with a better understanding of how sails work, control heel and speed, and sail a course.
Schedule: 9:30 AM-12:30 PM | Monday-Friday, One Week per Session
Cost: Non-Member $380 or SYC/MPYC Junior Member $295
Prerequisites: Must be at least 10 years old & taken Opti Development or are 11 years old with NO prior sailing experience.
Description: This morning class is limited to sailors from the Opti Development class and older beginning sailors whose age and size are better able to handle a larger boat. Sailors will learn how to work as a team as this is a two-person boat. They will walk away with parts of the sail and control lines and how to steer with a rudder, body weight, and sails.

Prerequisites: Must be at least 8 years old or about to enter 3rd grade.
Description: Fundamentals of Sailing, Kayak & Stand-Up Paddle Boarding in Monterey harbor. The class will be kayaking along the Monterey shoreline and paddle boarding through the mooring fields. Each sailor will be sailing on a 14-16 foot Capri sailboat with an instructor. A great introduction to the water and the bay we live on. Note: For all-day programming look at the learn to sail class in the morning.

Cost: Non-Member $380 or SYC/MPYC Junior Member $295
Prerequisites: Must be at least 11 years old and have taken an Opti development class.
Description: This class is designed for sailors who have prior sailing experience and want to develop better sailing skills in stronger winds and start competitive racing. Instruction will focus on developing the skills necessary to participate in outside regattas by the end of the summer.
Schedule: 1:30 AM-4:30 PM | Monday-Friday, Two Week Session
Cost: Must be SYC or MPYC Junior Member $495
Prerequisites: Must be at least 12 years old and have taken an Opti or FJ development class.
Description: This morning class is limited to sailors from the Opti Development class and older beginning sailors whose age and size are better able to handle a larger boat. Sailors will learn how to work as a team as this is a two-person boat. They will walk away with parts of the sail and control lines and how to steer with a rudder, body weight, and sails.

Cost: Must be SYC or MPYC Junior Member $495
Prerequisites: Must be at least 14 years old and have taken an FJ or 420 development class.
Description: This class is designed for sailors who have prior sailing experience and want to develop better sailing skills in stronger winds and start competitive racing. Instruction will focus on developing the skills necessary to participate in outside regattas by the end of the summer. Sailors will walk away with the ability to trapeze and fly a spinnaker.
Schedule: 1:30 AM-4:30 PM | Monday-Friday, Three Week Session
Cost: Must be SYC or MPYC Junior Member $695
Prerequisites: Must be at least 14 years old and have taken an FJ or 420 development class.
Description: This class is designed for sailors who have prior sailing experience and want to develop better sailing skills in stronger winds, improve boat handling and start competitive racing. Instruction will focus on developing single-handed sailing skills necessary to participate in outside regattas by the end of the summer. Sailors will walk away with boat-specific skills necessary to sail the Laser (ILCA).
Schedule: 1:30 AM-4:30 PM | Monday-Friday, Two Week Session
Cost: Must be SYC or MPYC Junior Member $495
Scholarships for Monterey Peninsula Yacht Club Summer Sailing programs are generously underwritten by the Monterey Peninsula Youth Sailing Foundation (MPYSF).
It is our hope that any child within the community who has a desire to participate in the sport of sailing will have an opportunity to do so, regardless of whether or not they feel they can afford it. Full and partial Scholarship awards will be based on several factors including but not limited to funds available, number of requests received and needs of the applicant/individual/family.
